Cannon River Cleanup Plan Open for Comment
A draft of the Total Maximum Daily Load study for the Lower Cannon River's turbidity impairment has been completed. This important document is a crucial piece of the workings of the federal Clean Water Act to get our local waters back to a swimmable and fishable condition. It addresses major cutbacks in soil erosion which will be necessary to improve the Lower Cannon River, that is, the portion of the river below the dam at the Byllesby reservoir, which is a rich recreational asset for local and statewide citizens.
The public is invited to a meeting to review this draft, and to offer input. Please note that this is not the official public comment period for the draft, rather it is a preliminary review. The public meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 14th, 7-8:30 p.m. at First English Lutheran Church, 511 Belle St. W., Cannon Falls. The public is also invited to a "brown bag" picnic supper which will precede the meeting, from 5:30 to 6:45 at Hannah's Bend Park in Cannon Falls. Please bring your own food and drink; a hot charcoal grill will be available.
The Executive Summary of the draft TMDL will be available for citizen review at the following public libraries: Owatonna, Faribault, Waseca, Northfield, Cannon Falls, and Red Wing after June 6th. The complete draft document will be available from CRWP in the near future.
