This weekend, the Loser’s Lounge will pay homage to the Kinks, perhaps the greatest rock and roll band to emerge out of the British Invasion.
Over 20 different singers will performs Kinks songs, featuring many Kinks classics and lesser-known gems.
The Loser’s Lounge is a long-running tribute series that began in New York in 1993 with a tribute to Burt Bacharach. Despite the self-effacing name, the Loser’s Lounge has performed at Lincoln Center, The Westbeth Theater Center, The Jewish Museum, Celebrate Brooklyn, The Knitting Factory and the Bowery Ballroom.
Sometimes famous people stop by to sing (Nellie McKay, Michael Cerveris, Andy Richter, Debby Harry, Fred Armisen, J Mascis) but some of the most amazing performances are by the lesser-known NYC scenesters. When Loser’s Lounge last paid homage to the Kinks in 2000, the late great Joey Ramone sang “Tired of Waiting” and “Set Me Free”. It was one of Joey’s last performances and truly a highlight in Loser’s Lounge history.
