Among their composers' most enduringly popular works, Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto and Sibelius' Second Symphony were both begun in Italy, about a year apart. All three of the pieces on this program in fact, were composed within ten years at the beginning of the 20th century, but each reveals utterly idiosyncratic hallmarks of orchestral color and musical fantasy.
