Left of Zed is John Cho, JK, Brian Sapp and Alberto Albis. Thier influences are far ranging individually, and they like it that way. They allude to their respective musical pasts, then mix in more modern textures. The result is something simultaneously familiar and entirely new. Some folks find it difficult to get past the low-key charm and obsess about the cuteness of THE SKYFLAKES . With four out of five members of the band related to someone else in the band, one recalls the endearingly earnest cinematic or televised portrayals of kids playing rock in more innocent times, minus the horrific outfits the Brady kids were forced into when they were turned into pop stars. Yet, a closer listen or look at the Skyflakes' lyrics provide something more than just endearing cuteness. Pidgeon, the dirty dove of rock music. Impossible to pigeonhole (ouch), the band?s three guitar assault boosts and buries pop hooks with swirling noise and power riffs. They blend Val and Micah?s off-kilter pop vocals (a la Blonde Redhead) with Micah?s intense and ferocious screaming (a la Rudimentary Peni or certain black metal bands). The Cardigans vs. Motorhead? A modern Pixies? A Heavier Vegetable? You could play band math all day, but Pidgeon is Pidgeon, a delicate and frightening rock band.

Virtually unknown until recently, the band?s fan-base has grown like a rabbit population and audience response has bordered on the chemical. After seeing them open at 2004?s Noise Pop festival, Live 105 (KITS, San Francisco, the largest commercial alternative station in the region) music director Aaron Axelson declared them one of his top favorite five bands at Noise Pop on his show.
