LOCAL SHORTS, 96 min. A wide variety of comedy, drama, animation and documentary shorts from Los Angeles-based directors, including: “Method” (2011, 9 min.), Rider and Shiloh Strong’s comedy about a struggling actress (impressive Alexandra Barreto) who really takes her work seriously; “Touch” (2010, 11 min.), Jen McGowan’s beautifully shot film exploring the universal themes of isolation and need for community; “Kill Me, Deadly” (2012, 14 min.), Darrett Sanders and Bill Robens’ lovingly rendered black-and-white, hilarious homage to the beloved film noir classics of the 1940s and '50s (shot at Musso & Frank’s!); Christophe Nassif’s “What to Bring to America” (2010, 14 min), in which an Ethiopian immigrant in Los Angeles has to make a crucial decision regarding her daughter’s future; Marise Samitier’s “Death of a Housewife” (2012, 7 min), about a housewife who awakens to a new reality and leaves her kitchen behind; Tracy Wren’s “Neighbors” (2010, 17 min), an adaptation from the work of Raymond Carver, in which Vern and Lorraine step into more than their neighbor’s shoes when housesitting; Elizabeth Willy’s “The Seventh Room” (2011, 9 min), a gorgeous animation that takes us from room to room in an old house; and Robert James and Ondi Timoner’s “Library of Dust” (2010, 15 min), a fascinating and moving doc about recently discovered urns containing the unclaimed, cremated remains of patients at the Oregon State Hospital. Discussion following the screening with filmmakers Jen McGowan, Darrett Sanders, Bill Robens, Rider Strong, Shiloh Strong, Ondi Timoner and Kirsten Vangsness.
