Local Harvest: Farms, Food, and Family January 17, 2009

On Saturday, January 17, 2009(snow date January 24), the Northern New Jersey Chapter of Slow Food and the Morris County Historical Society will bring together about 20 local farmers and food artisans for an afternoon of sampling and purchasing of the best local food at LOCAL HARVEST: NJ Farms, Food, & Family. Inside the spacious Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morristown, visitors can meet local farmers and food artisans, buy seasonal vegetables & fruit, grass fed & finished beef and pork, herbs, poultry, eggs, cheese, breads, teas and prepared foods. Learn about Community Supported Agriculture and how your family can purchase a seasonal farm share for a reasonable cost from the Community Supported Garden at Genesis Farm, Starbrite Farm, or Rogowski Farm. Breads and cheeses from NJ’s finest bakers and cheese makers; Bob-O-Link Dairy & Bakeyard, Valley Shepherd Creamery, and Bakehouse Bread. Delicious NJ bred apples & apple cider will be available from Best Fruit Farm.
The Health Shoppe will round out the event with local hydroponic tomatoes, dried beans, heirloom potatoes, local organic blueberry pie, and more.
Children will be treated to a butter making demonstration and can take home a handmade pot with a vegetable seed they planted.
NJ’s chefs and food artisans will demonstrate seasonal dishes. Kathy Hester from Bakehouse Bread will demonstrate a hearty winter soup that can be served in one of her artisan bread bowls. Kombucha will be demonstrated by local chef instructor, Elise Maiberger.
Eco-friendly bags will be available for purchase to store and carry your food purchased at the event from Alter Eco.
