The Ministers of Light, a survivor-driven ministry within the Archdiocese of San Francisco focused on domestic violence prevention, crisis intervention, and pastoral healing, will host its inaugural Taize in collaboration with the Sisters of Mercy on Friday, May 21, 2010 at 7pm at Mercy Center, Burlingame.
Taize is an ecumenical service that offers the opportunity for personal healing, for expression of communion with those who are suffering, and also for quiet, contemplative meditation in the context of song and word. It is a time for reflection, reconciliation, centering, and prayer. This service originated at a monastery located in Taize, France in 1940.
"In Mathew 11:28, Jesus said: 'Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest,'" said Maria Rosales-Uribe, Ministers of Light Steering Committee member, "When I participate in Taize prayer at Mercy Center, I truly feel I am laying at rest my burdens and pain at the cross. Paradoxically, it is the beautiful simple chants that create a sense of silence and peace."
Mercy Center and the Sisters of Mercy in Burlingame typically host a Taize service in the Chapel at Mercy Center, Burlingame during the first Friday of each month. This Taize is an additional service in support of the important work of the Ministers of Light. According to Suzanne Buckley, Mercy Center Director, "By offering hospitality to the Ministers of Light, we continue the long tradition of Mercy in opening our doors to those who suffer in any way. Those who know the history of the Sisters of Mercy know their commitment to providing solace and help to women and children who have been marginalized and oppressed - especially by violence and poverty. This is the work of Mercy in the world. We join in prayer and hope with the Ministers of Light that these efforts can bring peace to homes and hearts."
