News travels sporadically, and certainly not fast enough for those left behind at the Fort. Winter chill is in the air and women and children are watching for the return of the men of the California Battalion. Optimism could leave your family unprepared which could lead to illness or death, but the work of survival alone is overwhelmingly daunting. But, pioneers are resilient and practical. The men and women of the Fort band together to ensure the safety of their families with frugal planning that translates right through to today.
