The Iowa Genealogical Society will present “Sailing with Captain John Strout, at Sea 1853 – 1884,”a Lives and Times series lecture at 7 p.m. on 20 October, 2011, at the IGS Library, 628 East Grand Avenue, Des Moines. Katie Pattee, a member of the Story County Genealogical Society, will give the audience an exploration of New England family history as well as a peek into a sea captain’s perspective, an ancestor of her husband, Peter.

“We have some forty-five letters from Captain John W. Strout, including assorted papers and artifacts which I will be sharing so that the life of a sea captain in that era can be understood and appreciated,” Katie explains. “He was a master mariner in the Merchant marine business who sailed out of Salem, Massachusetts to the west coast of South America.” No registration is required for this free program.
