Star soprano Renée Fleming will host a special screening of the new documentary The Audition. Ms. Fleming’s introduction and the panel discussion which will follow the showing of the film will be broadcast live on location at the Met.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Susan Froemke, The Audition looks at the intense pressures young opera singers face as they struggle to succeed in one of the most challenging professions in the performing arts.
Fleming jump-started her own internationally celebrated career by winning the 1988 competition.
Following the film, extra content for this special event will include a panel of former National Council Audition winners. In addition to Fleming, singers such as Susan Graham, Nathan Gunn, Ben Heppner, and Deborah Voigt will share their personal stories of how they went on to become major artists thanks in part to the foundation established by winning the Auditions.
The Audition is both a suspenseful competition narrative and a revealing backstage look at what it takes to make it as an opera singer.
