Literature based theatrical series returns to Douglas County!
Parker Arts Council resumes “Literature to Life” series with J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit”
Parker, Colorado – The Parker Arts Council, a 501(c)(3) organization, continues its “Literature to Life” series, a new educational initiative. The series illuminates classical literature by animating great book classics through stage performance, showcasing local actors, puppetry, creative movement and eye popping special effects. Shows are appropriate for all ages and are priced to encourage family and group participation.
The series will continue its successful run with a presentation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. Under the direction of Highlands Ranch High School Theatre Director, Barb Dignan, this unique community collaboration runs the last two weekends in July. Incorporating a lighter touch to the classic tale, this production boasts a stellar cast supported with professionally designed costumes and sets. It also features a larger than life stage puppet built to portray the dragon Smaug. This spectacular puppet is built by regional Emmy award winning creative mind, Dave Privett, and provides a crucial element to the exciting culmination of the story.
The show plays at Highlands Ranch High School, 9375 Cresthill Lane in Highlands Ranch on July 22, 23, 24 and again on the 29, 30, and 31. 7:00 p.m. shows run on Fridays and Saturdays, 3:00 p.m. matinees run on Saturdays and Sundays. (Saturdays offer both a matinee and an evening performance.) All tickets are $10, children 2 and under are free if seated on the lap of a paid patron. Community members are encouraged to obtain a copy of the book at their local library or bookstore, complete fun puzzles or quizzes and bring them to the production in order to win great prizes donated by local businesses. This year prizes include items from the Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies, Elitch Gardens and more. The cast is led by familiar faces at the Parker Arts Council. Mark Como, who has directed hits such as “Harvey” and “Moon Over Buffalo” is charming as Bilbo, the reluctant adventurer. Jeffrey Johnson, most recently seen in “Dearly Departed” brings strength and command in the role of Gandalf, the Wizard. Patrons will applaud the return of Doug Tisdale, Sr. to the Parker Arts Council stage. Most recently seen as Scrooge in “A Christmas Carol”, Doug’s portrayal of Thorin the dwarf is engaging and memorable. Kristen Mair, most recently seen in “A Christmas Carol” commands the stage as the Elven Queen and Doug Tisdale, Jr. brings Smaug the Dragon to life through his unique voice work. A true treat is the the portrayal of Bombur the dwarf as portrayed by Kathy Baerns, most recently seen in Parker Arts Council’s portrayal of “Kitchen Witches”. Don’t miss the memorable portrayal of Gollum, performed by HRHS student Niko Kuklan and a highlight of the production.
The Parker Arts Council (PAC) was formed in 2003 and is comprised of professionals, musicians, artists, teachers, directors, and business leaders. The Parker Arts Council’s mission statement is “To provide opportunities for cultural enrichment through participation, education and outreach to the local community”.
