Celebrating the popular cinematic style, the Lindo Theatre, at 115 S. Chicago Ave. in Freeport, has been showcasing a Film Noir/Hardboiled Detectives Film Series in partnership with the Stephenson County Historical Museum and Highland Community College. The last film in this series, “The Third Man,” will be shown on April 6, 2011, at 1 and 7pm. Tickets are $5 and available at the Lindo box office.
Film noir is about what people want, how badly they want it and how far they will go to get it. For movie-lovers, noir is all about style: canted camera angles, dense shadows, and a romantic, doom-laden atmosphere, always in shimmering, high-contrast black and white. Visually stylish and always suspenseful, these dramas are among the very best of the 1940’s and are considered among the greatest films of all time.
“The Third Man,” a 1949 thriller, starring Joseph Cotton and Orson Welles, tells the story of an out of work pulp fiction novelist, Holly Martins in post war Vienna. The city has been divided into sectors by the victorious allies and a shortage of supplies has led to a flourishing black market. Martins arrives at the invitation of an ex-school friend, Harry Lime, who has offered him a job, only to discover that Lime has recently died in a peculiar traffic accident. After talking to Lime's friends and associates Martins soon notices that some of the stories are inconsistent, and determines to discover what really happened to Harry Lime.
The series of Film Noir/Hardboiled Detective movies has been selected with the assistance of Dr. Ed Finch, executive director for the Freeport Historical Museum, and Alan Wenzel, the Speech and Communications Instructor for Highland Community College. There will be a brief introduction before each movie and a discussion led by Dr. Ed Finch and Alan Wenzel following the movie. Movie-goers are encouraged to stay after the movie to participate in this exchange. The series offers movie lovers a rare opportunity to see four Film Noir classics as originally intended – on a big screen with great sound in an entirely renovated, vintage 1922 theatre. For tickets and additional information, please call the Lindo Theatre at (815) 233-0413.
Mark your calendars for the bonus movie, the 30’s musical classic, “Swing Time,” starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, on April 17, 2011, at 1 and 7 pm. Admission is complimentary to movie goers who purchased tickets for the complete Film Noir series or $5 at the door.
