Lindo Theatre's Film Noir Series Presents "Double Indemnity" February 2, 2011

Lindo Theatre, at 115 S. Chicago Ave. in Freeport, is showcasing a Film Noir/Hardboiled Detectives Film Series in partnership with the Stephenson County Historical Museum and Highland Community College on select Wednesdays. The next film to be presented is “Double Indemnity” slated for February 2, 2011, at 1 p.m. or 7 p.m. Admission is $5 per movie. Tickets are available at the Lindo box office.

Film noir is about what people want, how badly they want it and how far they will go to get it. For movie-lovers, noir is all about style: canted camera angles, dense shadows, and a romantic, doom-laden atmosphere, always in shimmering, high-contrast black and white. Visually stylish and always suspenseful, these dramas are among the very best of the 1940’s and are considered among the greatest films of all time.

February 2: "Double Indemnity"
This 1944 Film Noir was co-written by Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler, and directed by Wilder. The film stars Fred MacMurray as insurance salesman Walter Neff, who has an affair with a client’s wife, Phyllis Dietrichson. Phyllis proposes they kill her husband to collect his insurance. Walter plots to receive twice the amount based on a double indemnity clause. Walter’s best friend does not believe that Mr. Dietrichson’s death was accidental and suspects Phyllis has murdered him with the help of another man.

The series of Noir/Hardboiled Detective movies has been selected with the assistance of Dr. Ed Finch, executive director for the Freeport Historical Museum, and Alan Wenzel, the Speech and Communications Instructor for Highland Community College. There will be a brief introduction before each movie and a discussion led by Dr. Ed Finch and Alan Wenzel following the movie. Movie-goers are encouraged to stay after the movie to participate in this exchange. The series offers movie lovers a rare opportunity to see four Film Noir classics as originally intended – on a big screen with great sound in an entirely renovated, vintage 1922 theatre.
