Lindo Theatre, located at 115 S. Chicago Ave., is showcasing its new film series: Screwball Comedies, in partnership with the Stephenson County Historical Museum and Highland Community College on select Wednesdays this fall. The next film to be presented is His Girl Friday on October 5th at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Admission is $5 per movie. Tickets are available at the Lindo box office.
Prominent in the mid-1930s to the mid-1940s, the screwball comedy is a sub-genre of the romantic comedy and combines farce and witty banter in unexpected ways. “This series offers movie-goers a rare opportunity to see classic favorites as originally intended – on a big screen with great sound and in an entirely renovated, vintage 1922 theatre,” explains Shirley Johnson, an owner of Classic Cinemas.
October 5: His Girl Friday
Starring Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell and Ralph Bellamy, this 1940 film tells the story of a newspaper editor, Walter Burns, who uses every trick in the book to keep his ace reporter ex-wife, Hildy Johnson, from remarrying. Burns frames the other man, Bruce Baldwin, and gets him into trouble frequently, while he tries to steer Hildy back into her old job at the newspaper.
The screwball comedies for the new series have been selected with the assistance of Dr. Ed Finch, executive director for the Freeport Historical Museum, and Alan Wenzel, the Speech and Communications Instructor for Highland Community College. There will be a brief introduction before each movie and a discussion led by Dr. Ed Finch and Alan Wenzel following the movie. Movie-goers are encouraged to stay after the movie to participate in this exchange.
