Lindo Theatre Presents New Film Series This Fall! September 7, 2011

Freeport, IL – Join Classic Cinemas for some fun and laughs this fall as the Lindo Theatre presents its new film series: Screwball Comedies. The program will kick off at the Lindo theatre, located at 115 S. Chicago Ave, on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 with a screening of It Happened One Night. Co-sponsored by Highland Community College and Stephenson County Historical Society, the Comedy Series will deliver classic film stars hamming it up. All show times are at 1 PM and 7 PM on select Wednesdays this fall. Admission is $20 for the series, or $5 per movie. Tickets will be available at the Lindo box office by August 15th. And, as an added bonus for those who purchase tickets to the entire series, the Lindo Theatre will offer complimentary admission to the 1944 Judy Garland musical favorite, Meet Me in St. Louis, on Wednesday, December 7, 2011.
Prominent in the mid-1930s to the mid-1940s, the screwball comedy is a sub-genre of the romantic comedy and combines farce and witty banter in unexpected ways. Lindo’s Comedy Film Series will feature screwball classics: It Happened One Night, His Girl Friday, Sullivan’s Travels and The Philadelphia Story! “This series offers movie-goers a rare opportunity to see classic favorites as originally intended – on a big screen with great sound and in an entirely renovated, vintage 1922 theatre,” explains Shirley Johnson, an owner of Classic Cinemas.
Screwball Comedy Series:
September 7: It Happened One Night
Starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, this 1934 film tells the story of a spoiled heiress who runs off to find her husband after her wealthy father has her marriage annulled. She winds up reluctantly accepting help from an out-of-work reporter who recognizes the opportunity for an exclusive story.

October 5: His Girl Friday
In this 1940 film, Cary Grant, a Chicago newspaper editor, uses every trick in the book to keep his ace reporter ex-wife from remarrying. Snappy, fast dialogue throughout the movie with a wacky cast of characters.

October 19: Sullivan’s Travels
Joel McCrea stars as a director of fluff films who goes on the road as a hobo to learn about life, which in the end gives him a rude awakening. Along the way, he meets Veronica Lake, as a down-on-her-luck aspiring actress.

November 9: The Philadelphia Story
When a rich woman's ex-husband, a photographer and tabloid-type reporter, turns up just before her planned remarriage, she begins to learn the truth about herself. The Philadelphia Story (1940) stars Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn and James Stewart.

PLUS, A SERIES BONUS:
December 7: Meet Me In St. Louis
This musical favorite from 1944, starring Judy Garland and Margaret O’Brien, is set in the year before the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, when the four Smith daughters learn lessons of life and love, even as they prepare for a reluctant move to New York.

The screwball comedies for the new series have been selected with the assistance of Dr. Ed Finch, executive director for the Freeport Historical Museum, and Alan Wenzel, the Speech and Communications Instructor for Highland Community College. There will be a brief introduction before each movie and a discussion led by Dr. Ed Finch and Alan Wenzel following the movie. Movie-goers are encouraged to stay after the movie to participate in this exchange.
