Lindo Theatre Presents Bonus Feature: “Singin’ in the Rain” December 4, 2012

Freeport, IL – Join the Lindo Theatre for the 1952 musical “Singin’ in the Rain,” starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, Donald O’Connor and Jean Hagen, on Wednesday, December 5th at 1 and 7 PM. This 60th Anniversary film is $5 or free as a bonus to anyone who purchased the entire series to Early Classic Comedy Films. This was the fifth classic film series at the Lindo, and the next series scheduled for Spring 2013 will feature science fiction films.

Frequently described as one of the best musicals ever made, “Singin’ in the Rain” tells the story of silent films giving way to talking pictures and a hoofer-turned matinee idol is caught in that bumpy transition. Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Lina Lamont (Jean Hagan) are the darlings of the silent silver screen. Offscreen, Don, aided by his happy-go-lucky friend and piano accompanist, Cosmo Brown (Donald O’Connor), has to dodge Lina's romantic overtures, especially when he falls for chorus girl Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds). With the advent of sound in motion pictures, it is decided to turn Don and Lina's new film into a "talkie" and a musical at that. The only problem is Lina's voice, which mere words cannot describe. Thus, Kathy is brought on to dub her speaking and singing voice in secret. When Lina finds out, she is infuriated and does everything possible to sabotage the romance between Don and Kathy.
“Singin’ in the Rain” topped AFI's 100 Years of Musicals list, and ranked fifth in its updated list of the greatest American films in 2007.

The recently concluded series of Early Classic Comedy Films was selected with the assistance of Dr. Ed Finch, executive director for the Freeport Historical Museum, and Alan Wenzel, the Speech and Communications instructor for Highland Community College. There will be a brief introduction before the movie and a discussion led by Dr. Ed Finch and Alan Wenzel following the movie. Movie-goers are encouraged to stay after the movie to participate in this exchange.
