Sustainable lighting as a tool for development and ecological conservation
Sierra Club member Grady Semmens spent 3 weeks in May, 2007 visiting rural communities in central Africa with the Light Up The World Foundation, based at the U of C.
The Foundation is working with wilderness conservation groups in several countries to bring sustainable sources of solar-powered lighting to villages that are taking part in community-oriented conservation efforts to protect fragile wildlife habitat for species including hippos and endangered mountain gorillas.
This informative slide show will delve into the links between community development and ecological conservation and how one cannot happen without the other.
The Light Up The World Foundation has lit up more than 14,000 homes in 42 countries around the world using solid-state lighting technology.
This presentation is part of a monthly meeting series for the Sierra Club Chinook Group. They meet on the 1st Wednesday of each month just outside of downtown. For more info, go to www.sierraclubchinook.org.
