LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL, 116 minutes (1997)
by Roberto Benigni
In 1930s Italy, a carefree Jewish bookkeeper named Guido starts a fairy-tale life by courting and marrying a lovely woman from a nearby town. Guido and his wife have a son and live happily until the rise of Fascist Anti-Semitism in Europe inevitably reaches their small community. After deportation to a Nazi concentration camp, Guido helps his son to believe that their predicament is a game with a grand-prize awaiting whomever can survive the longest.
