Admission is FREE, but donated books are welcome and encouraged
Housing Works Bookstore Café hosts the first live taping of ?Liberal Arts?, a pilot for an arts and culture program currently in development for Air America Radio. Join Katherine Lanpher ? co-host of ?The Al Franken Show? on Air America Radio ? as she entertains authors, singer-songwriters and artists in an evening of conversation and performance.
The first evening?s program, which will be an hour in length, features Allison Moorer and Steve Earle, currently on tour together. They?ll make a stop at ?Liberal Arts? and Katherine will talk to Allison about her latest album, ?The Duel,? and, in a switch, Steve Earle will discuss his other career as a playwright and fiction writer.
About Katherine Lanpher: Katherine Lanpher is a veteran newspaper and public radio journalist. She was host of Minnesota Public Radio?s ?Midmorning? for six years before joining Al Franken as co-host of ?The Al Franken Show.? Her work has also appeared in print publications including the Saint Paul Pioneer-Press and the New York Times.
About Steve Earle: For the past two decades, Steve Earle has been one of the more compelling figures of the American cultural landscape. Steve is the author of the best-selling novel ?Doghouse Roses?, a playwright, and a well-known speaker and presence in a variety of left-leaning populist movements. He is most well known for his career as a singer-songwriter and pioneer of the alt-country movement. Earle picked up his first Grammy Award this year for Best Contemporary Folk Album for his newest record, ?The Revolution Starts? Now.?
Praise for Earle?s ?Doghouse Roses?: ??Doghouse Roses? is a beautiful and moving collection of short stories by one of our greatest American songwriters. I?m tempted to say that it reads like a collaboration between Steinbeck and Kerouac and Bukowski, but really, I can?t think of anything else quite like it. Steve Earle has taken the great American road song and set it to prose.? ? Jay McInerney
About Allison Moorer: Allison Moorer is a new kind of country singer. She balances her music between rich traditional tones and more contemporary production and presentation. Audiences got their first taste of Moorer with the 1998 release of ?Alabama Song? and a year later she performed ?A Soft Place to Fall? for the film ?The Horse Whisperer? and was nominated for an Academy Award for her efforts. Moore?s newest record, ?The Duel,? was released by Sugar Hill records last year. She is currently on tour with Steve Earle.
Praise for Moorer?s ?The Duel?: ?Most of the songs are like a Southern accent: eight miles an hour, deliberate and very dangerous to underestimate.? ? Rolling Stone
