As an engineer, artist and scientist, Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) challenged the knowledge and limitations of his era through obsessive inquiry, inventiveness and sheer dexterity, arguably contributing more to todays world than any other individual. Whether painting some of the worlds most enduring artworks, foreseeing and designing such modern military vehicles as the tank and flying machines, or examining the miniscule, internal workings of the human body, da Vinci was a man continually alert to the infinite possibilities that surrounded him. In this companion course to the da Vinci exhibition opening at the Houston Museum of Natural Science in March, local and national experts will explore the many sides of this complex mastermind.
