Jonathan Winters is an icon of American comedy. A comic actor for more than five decades, Winters is legendary for his improvised characters - from ominous prison guards to little old ladies. With roots in Dayton, Ohio, Winters served as a Marine in the South Pacific during World War II. His talent was discovered when he won five gallons of ice cream for being the funniest man on board his aircraft carrier. In the 1960s, Winters recorded many classic comedy albums based on his standup, including The Wonderful World of Jonathan Winters, Here's Jonathan, and Another Day, Another World. His influence grew with the dawn of television, where his signature mimicry and wild spontaneity were frequently showcased on "The Steve Allen Show," "Colgate Comedy Hour," "The Jack Paar Program," and Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show." In the 1970s, he appeared as Mork's infant son Mearth on "Mork & Mindy" with Robin Williams. Williams has called Winters his mentor and greatest influence. Winters has acted in many movies and cartoons, including notables roles in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Viva Max, The Russians Are Coming!, Evelyn Waugh's The Loved One, and The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle. In addition to his pioneering work as a performer, Winters is the author of the bestselling short story collection Winters Tales and is a passionate painter. In 1999, Winters was awarded the second annual Mark Twain Prize for his significant contributions to American humor. Many comedians including Robin Williams, Bonnie Hunt, Steve Allen, and Sid Caesar paid tribute to their idol at the Kennedy Center event in Washington. May 30th, 2007 marks Jonathan Winter's third appearance with City Arts & Lectures in San Francisco.
