Nationally renowned art historian, writer, and preservationist Stephen May will present “Legacy at Risk: Artists’ Homes and Studios” at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, 2007 at Keller Hall at the University of New Mexico. The lecture and slide show is sponsored by the UNM Art Museum Friends of Art.
Long active in historic preservation, May has taken a particular interest in preserving, maintaining, and interpreting sites associated with America’s most celebrated American painters and sculptors.
Highlights will include some of the over 250 American artists’ homes and studios May has identified, along with examples of artwork created there. May’s presentation will also feature UNM’s Jonson Gallery, the home and studio of Raymond Jonson who died in 1982, and other New Mexico homes and studios of Taos artists Ernest Blumenshein and Nicolai Fechin, along with Santa Feans Randall Davey and Allan Houser.
A reception will be held for Mr. May at the Jonson Gallery on Friday, October 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. This reception is free and open to the public. A question and answer session will follow the lecture on Saturday, October 27, which is open to the public. The cost for the lecture is $10 per person.
