The "Contemporary Ceramics of Mata Ortiz" exhibit at the Las Cruces Museum of Art will close on Saturday, Jan. 20, with a free lecture, "Paquime': Archaeology and Inspiration," by Dr. Roy "Ben" Brown at 11 am in the Museums Main Gallery. Brown will describe his experiences in Paquime' and Casa Grandes to contextualize the archaeological pieces that are part of the Museums exhibit and provide a historical overview to the contemporary movement in ceramics. Also on that date, trader Jerry Boyd will offer an additional selection of Mata Ortiz ceramics and Zapotec rugs for sale. The Museum is located at 490 N. Water St. in the downtown mall. Born in Britain, Dr. Brown holds a Masters of Arts degree in Anthropology from the Universidad de las Americas (Cholula, Puebla) and a Doctorate in Anthropology from the University of Arizona, Tucson. In 1998, he headed the conservation of Paquime', the largest adobe city in northern Mexico and became an internationally recognized expert in the conservation of earthen architecture.
Dr. Brown has directed numerous of archaeological, historical and paleontological projects in northern Mexico, as well as organized conferences, meetings and related events in Casas Grandes and Cuidad Juarez.. In 2001, Brown joined the staff of the Museo Historico ex Aduana Frontieriza de Cuidad Juarez. His current research focus is French artist Leon Trousset, who traveled through the American southwest and northern Mexico. Two of Troussets paintings from 1887 are on exhibit at the Citizens Bank in downtown Las Cruces.
