The public persona of surrealist painter Salvador Dali, whose work is currently on exhibit at the Las Cruces Museum of Art, was as surprising and remarkable as his artworks. An insight into the nature of this famous artist will be given by Mireille Sprengers Dohmen in a free lecture at the Branigan Cultural Centers Shannon room on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 11 a.m. Dohmens talk, Dali Through My Spectacles, a Personal Impression, is presented in conjunction with the Dali Illustrates Dantes Divine Comedy exhibit continuing at the Museum through Sunday, Nov. 25.
A native of Antwerp, Belgium, Mireille Dohmen has a strong background in the arts. While earning her degree at the Teachers College in Herenthals, Belgium, she concurrently received training in mime and performance from noted theater educator M.A.J. Hoste and sang with the Polymnia folk music group. She taught kindergarten and elementary students at the Tachkemoni School in Antwerp from 1971- 89. From then until 1994, she was the Manager for Modern Art of S.A. Kunsthandel Den Tijd, a group of commercial art galleries. Her husband, surrealist artist Leo Dohmen, was a contemporary of Rene Magritte and Salvador Dali. Together the Dohmens were a part of the art scene surrounding the surrealist movement in Europe. Ms. Dohmens experience also includes organizing painting and sculpture exhibitions and interior design for non-residential buildings. She recently collaborated with researchers and organizers on a retrospective exhibit of the works of Belgian Surrealists. Now retired, Ms. Dohmen visits Las Cruces often and travels extensively.
