Lecture: K. Tudor Silva March 2, 2005

K. Tudor Silva, professor of sociology at the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka, will give a lecture titled ?Globalization and Tsunami: Opportunities and Challenges for Shaping the Future of Sri Lanka? at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2 in Carleton College?s Leighton Hall, Room 304. The event is free and open to the public.

Silva received his B.A. from the University of Ceylon in Sri Lanka (currently split up into many campuses, including Peradeniya) and his Ph.D. from Monash University, an institution with campuses in Australia, Malaysia and South Africa. He has authored many books on Sri Lankan society, especially on issues related to poverty, health care and ethnicity. For many years, he has been an instructor for the Intercollegiate Sri Lanka Education (ISLE) program in Sri Lanka, which since 1982 has brought more than 300 students to study in the country from eight different U.S. colleges, including Carleton. Silva teaches a popular course on caste and ethnicity for ISLE. He also has been a visiting professor at Hobart/William Smith and Bowdoin Colleges, as well as in England and South Africa.
