Lecture: Glen Davis February 28, 2005

Glenn Davis, professor of medieval literature and history of the English language at St. Cloud State University, will present a speech on medieval culture titled ?Protective Measures in Anglo-Saxon England: An Introduction to the Sources? at 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 28 at Carleton College?s Gould Library Athenaeum. The event is free and open to the public.

Anglo-Saxons had a strong interest in obtaining various types of protection for the body, such as charms, prayers, spells and medicinal recipes. They believed these forms of protection prevented accidents, illnesses and attacks by enemies. Davis will talk about the appearances of protection in the vast surviving corpus of Old English poetry and the period?s Latin liturgical and poetic texts.

Davis received his B.A. from Harvard University, his M.A. from the University of York and his Ph.D. from the University of Texas, Austin. He has had a longtime interest in protection and the body and has published work on the Old English poem, ?Genesis B.? He also participated in the 2004 National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute on Anglo-Saxon England for College Teachers. The institute featured discussion on various aspects of Anglo-Saxon Studies, including literature, history, art and architecture.
