Lecture: Frank Graziano October 14, 2005

Frank Graziano, the John D. MacArthur Professor of Hispanic Studies at Connecticut College, will give a lecture, titled ?Cultures of Devotion: Folk Saints of Spanish America? on Friday, Oct. 14, at 4:30 p.m. in/at the Carleton College Gould Library Athenaeum. The event is free and open to the public.

Since the beginning of his career in 1990, Frank Graziano has written on an extraordinarily wide range of topics in Latin American culture. His early work was on poetry, resulting in the edited volume ?Semblanza de Alejandra Pizarnik.? Later studies resulted in ?Divine Violence: Spectacle, Psychosexuality, & Radical Christianity in the Argentine ?Dirty War? ? and the book, ?The Lust of Seeing,? about the Uruguayan fiction writer Felisberto Hernández. In 1999, Graziano published ?The Millennial New World,? which surveys apocalyptic, messianic, millennial and utopian thought and action throughout the course of Latin American history. He also authored a book, titled ?Wounds of Love: The Mystical Marriage of St. Rose of Lima.?

Graziano spent 2002-2004 on a two-year sabbatical partially supported by fellowships from the Fulbright-Hays program and the American Council of Learned Societies where he conducted research in Argentina, Bolivia and Peru. His research resulted in a book, titled ?Cultures of Devotion: Folk Saints of Spanish America,? to be published by Oxford University Press in 2006 and a web site for the folk saints project, CulturesOfDevotion.com.

Graziano is the recipient of many awards in support of his research, writing and teaching. He has received grants and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, the John Carter Brown Library, the Fulbright Program, and the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center, among many others. While a visiting professor at Johns Hopkins University in 1995, he was awarded an Oraculum Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Graziano currently serves on the Institute of International Education's national selection committee for Fulbright awards to South America.
