Lecture: Celia Perez Ventura May 3, 2005

Celia Perez Ventura, senior lecturer in Spanish and Portuguese languages and cultures at Princeton University, will give a lecture in Spanish titled ?De la sífilis y su cura: la historia verdadera de un palo salutífero? at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3 at the Carleton College Gould Library Athenaeum. The event, which is co-sponsored by Carleton?s Latin American studies and romance languages departments, is free and open to the public.

Ventura received her M.A. from Queens College of the City University of New York (CUNY) and her Ph.D. from the Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Literatures Program of CUNY?s Graduate School. Her dissertation, titled ?Contexto sin texto: Aproximaciones a la transmisión de las Obras de Cristóbal de Castillejo,? deals primarily with the history of the texts of a much-quoted but not so well-known Spanish Renaissance author. Her paper stresses the importance of a well-annotated edition of his works as well as a new reading and contextualization in the literary tendencies and canon of that period.

Ventura has worked at Princeton since 2002, and she is also the Spanish language program coordinator. She has co-authored several Spanish language textbooks and has published two articles?one on Spanish philosopher and essayist José Ortega y Gasset and his views on women, and a second titled ?O Don Xoán de Méndez Ferrín.? Her principal areas of interest are Spanish Renaissance poetry, trans-Atlantic studies, acquisition of Spanish as a second language, and language methodology teaching.
