A professor and chair of philosophy at the New School for Social Research, J. M. Bernstein focuses on critical theory, modernism in art and philosophy, idealism and embodiment, and ethics. In recent years he has been especially interested in painting, particularly with respect to the fate of materiality, concreteness, and medium specificity in an era of ideology and alienation. His books include “Against Voluptuous Bodies: Adorno’s Late Modernism and the Meaning of Painting” and “Adorno: Disenchantment and Ethics.”
