Lead Feet and Nothing Upstairs: A History of the Lifelike June 7, 2007

An experimental puppet play that portrays the questionable motives, extraordinary methods, and unsettling repercussions of creating the illusion of life. "Lead Feet" tells the story of The Ditto Sisters, identical triplets who set off a rash of architectural and perhaps human replication in the City of Los Angeles. Throughout the performance buildings and characters multiply and contract, as many generations of artificial bodies mimic and interact with one another. The multi-layered performance, with puppets playing dummies, pixels resembling puppets, and puppets mimicking people invoking automata, is a complex exploration of - and entertaining indulgence in - fakery and the willing suspension of disbelief, set lovingly in Los Angeles, a city usually unconcerned with the cult of originality.
