Compared to the earlier part of the twentieth century, when writer H. L. Mencken referred to the South as the "Sahara of the Bozart," the modern South is marked by an extensive range of art museums and galleries, independent art schools and university art departments, commercial and nonprofit galleries and private and corporate collections. Today the region is widely regarded as one of the nation's most hospitable for the arts.
