Impressionism, postimpressionism and others are the late 19th/early 20th century art movements that are celebrated today. However during those periods the public together with art gallery directors and staff admired and mainly collected academic painting and sculpture. The results of this can be seen in public galleries around the world including the Art Gallery of NSW. Once out of fashion, academic art is undergoing a resurgence in popularity.
