ANDRÉ LAPLANTE PLAYS BEETHOVEN WITH SINFONIA TORONTO
Legendary Canadian pianist André Laplante will perform with Sinfonia Toronto under Maestro Nurhan Arman on Friday, May 13 at 8 pm in Glenn Gould Studio. Mr. Laplante will be heard in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2.
The ‘Laplante’s Beethoven’ program will complement this masterwork with Albinoni’s renowned Adagio, Rorate Coeli by University of Toronto faculty member Norbert Palej and Schubert’s Quartet in G Minor in a new orchestral version.
André Laplante has firmly established himself as one of the world’s great romantic virtuosos. He first attracted international attention after winning prizes at the Geneva and Sydney International Piano Competitions, then captured the silver medal at the International Tchaïkovsky Competition in Moscow. Critics have compared him with Ashkenazy, Horowitz and Rudolph Serkin, placing him in the elite circle of virtuoso pianists who do not hesitate to take risks.
Acclaimed as “a world-class ensemble” by Germany’s Russelsheimer Echo, Sinfonia Toronto is one of Canada’s finest chamber orchestras. Its repertoire includes all the major works for string orchestra from baroque to contemporary, and it has premiered many new works. It is based at CBC Glenn Gould Studio, where many of its concerts have been recorded for national broadcast. Other recordings include a CD of works by Mendelssohn, Shostakovich and Khachaturian; a world-premiere recording of the newly discovered J.S. Bach aria ‘Alles mit Gott,’ released by Analekta on iTunes; and the JUNO winner Flanders Field Reflections, a Marquis Classics (EMI) CD of music by John Burge.
Sinfonia Toronto’s Music Director Nurhan Arman has conducted throughout the world to great critical acclaim. His upcoming international engagements include performances with the Moscow Philharmonic, Belgrade Philharmonic and Mexico’s UANL Monterrey Symphony.
Tickets are $49 adult; $39 senior and $19 student. They can be purchased from 416-872-4255 or at http://www.roythomson.com/eventdetail?eventId=507
