Amstel Quartet
Widely admired for its eclecticism and integrity, the Amstel Quartet performs on the Lakewood Cultural Center stage at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5. These four young saxophonists from Amsterdam engage their worldwide audiences in riveting performances filled with high energy, emotion and infectious vitality. TheLakewood program includes works by Jan P. Sweelinck (arr. Apswoude), Richard Wagner (arr. Kramers), Tan Dun (arr. Apswoude), Jean Rivier, Samuel Barber (arr. Van der Linden) and Michael Torke.

The Amstel Quartel members are Remco Jak. soprano saxophone, Olivier Sliepen, alto saxophone, Bas Apswoude, tenor saxophone and Ties Mellema, baritone saxophone. They met while touring with the Dutch National Youth Orchestra and in 1997 decided to form a quartet where they could test the boundaries of the conventional saxophone repertoire of the time. It’s been more than a decade since the Amstel Quartet blew its first notes. Since then, the four enthusiastic saxophonists have built an international reputation in the world of chamber music and often collaborate with artists from other disciplines such as dance, musical theater, mime and cinema.
Versatility and talent have earned the Amstel Quartet numerous competition prizes including the Concert Artists Guild Management Award and Audience Prize at Carnegie Hall in New York City in 2006 and topprizes at the International Chamber Music Competition in Illzach, France, the Netherland’s Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition and Ohio’s Chamber Music in the Yellow Springs Competition. The quartet has performed in prestigious venues such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Vredenburg in Utrecht, theLuxembourg Philharmonic, the Sogukado Hall in Tokyo and Carnegie Hall in New York, and it has toured extensively throughout Europe, Russia, the Middle East, the United States, China and Japan.
