Oak Park, IL – Lake Theatre continues its First Tuesday Film Club into May with the award winning documentary, “The Gatekeepers [PG-13].” This special presentation is slated for Tuesday, May 7th at 12 and 7PM. “The Gatekeepers” is a critically acclaimed documentary featuring interviews with all surviving members of the Israeli security agency whose activities and members are highly secretive. Directed by Dror Moreh, “The Gatekeepers” was awarded Best Documentary Film by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, named Best Nonfiction Film of 2012 by the National Society of Film Critics and nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Tickets are $6 for matinee/seniors and $8.50 for adults. Advance tickets are available online or at the Lake Theatre box office, located at 1022 Lake Street.
The director faced initial difficulties in persuading the “Gatekeepers” to appear on film and express their opinions on classified and highly sensitive topics. The film consists of seven segments that roughly follow a loose chronological order and delve into controversial topics. Interviews with the “Gatekeepers” consist of the interviewee’s opinions on classified or highly sensitive matters in relation to their role in the Shin Bet. The events discussed are illustrated with archival footage and computer-generated imagery bringing historic photographs to life.
On the first Tuesday of each month, Lake Theatre presents afternoon and evening screenings of documentary, foreign, or classic films at 12pm and 7pm. The program includes an advisory board, currently consisting of local residents Bobbie Raymond, Susie Helfrich, and Mary Kay O’Grady, along with Shirley Johnson of Classic Cinemas, who collaborate on film selection. Film discussions follow both screenings. The afternoon discussion is led by Joe Barillari , Doug Deuchler leads in the evening.
