Oak Park, IL – Lake Theatre continues its First Tuesday Film Club into January with the Danish film “A Royal Affair.” This special presentation is slated for Tuesday, January 8th at 12 and 7PM. “A Royal Affair” is the critically acclaimed period piece depicting the tumultuous affair of an English queen with her husband’s physician and closest adviser. Directed by Nikolaj Arcel, “A Royal Affair” won awards for Best Screenplay and Best Actor at the Berlin International Film Festival. Tickets are $6 for matinee/seniors and $8.50 for adults. Advance tickets are available online or at the Lake Theatre box office, located at 1022 Lake Street.
Based on historical events of 18th century Denmark, “A Royal Affair” follows a disastrous love triangle that changes a nation. Alicia Vikander stars as Caroline Matilde, an English princess who marries the insane King Christian VII, played by Mikkel Boe Følsgaard, who won Best Actor for his harrowing role. The young queen falls desperately in love with the king’s doctor, Johann Struensee, a brilliant political idealist played by Mads Mikkelson. As their love grows, their affair proves catastrophic for not only the court, but for the fate of the entire country. Running just over two hours, “A Royal Affair” is a gripping tale of a little known piece of history. After both the 12 PM and 7 PM showings, Lake Theatre will have discussion leaders to lead a conversation about “A Royal Affair.” Don’t miss the chance to see this international hit!
On the first Tuesday of each month, Lake Theatre presents afternoon and evening screenings of documentary, foreign, art house, or classic films at 12 and 7pm. The program includes an advisory board, currently consisting of local residents Bobbie Raymond, Susie Helfrich, and Mary Kay O’Grady, along with Shirley Johnson of Classic Cinemas, who collaborate on securing guest lecturers and discussion leaders in addition to film selection.
