Oak Park, IL – Classic Cinemas’ Lake Theatre will screen the 2012 documentary, “A Place at the Table,” that follows the struggles with food insecurity three people face in the U.S. This 2012 Sundance Film Festival nominee for the Grand Jury Prize is presented by the Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry, and will be shown on Saturday, April 20th at 10 AM at 1022 Lake Street, in Oak Park. Suggested donation is $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. They are available at the Lake Theatre box office and online at www.classiccinemas.com.
From the same team responsible for the controversial but eye-opening “Food Inc,” “A Place at the Table” examines the issue of hunger in America by following three of the fifty million people who do not know where their next meal is coming from. Barbie, a single mother in Philadelphia, grew up in poverty and wishes to provide a better life for her two children. Rosie, a fifth-grader in Colorado has to depend on friends and neighbors for food and has trouble concentrating in school. Tremonica, a second-grader in Mississippi, has asthma and health problems exacerbated by the empty calories her hard work can afford. The documentary seeks to show the American public that making healthy food available and affordable is in everyone’s best interest as it poses serious economic, social and cultural implications.
For over 30 years, the villages of Oak Park and River Forest have come together to serve the hungry in our community. Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry started in the early 1970s by a small group of concerned citizens led by Patricia Funk, a local Girl Scout leader. In its effort to provide hunger relief in 2012, the food pantry provided nutritious groceries, produce, and meat and dairy products to 15,873 local families comprised of 44,466 individuals.
