The multifaceted focus of the Pacific Standard Time projects and events in 2011-2012 will offer different recollections, revelations and re-interpretations of art developments in Southern California in the postwar era.
One aspect that has not been regarded so far is the exchange between artists, gallery dealers and curators between Germany and Southern California.
The symposium will look in both directions (to Germany and to Southern California), discussing the artistic exchange, as well as the dissemination of art from California in Germany.
A video-montage with interviews of California artists will include a wide range or artists-voices.
The aim of HERE AND THERE is to introduce mechanisms of artistic exchange in the 1970s and offer a possibility for new exchange and dialogue.
The symposium is conceived by Doris Berger (Getty Postdoctoral Fellow) for and in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles and in cooperation with Stephanie Barron, senior curator of modern art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Different formats will be employed throughout the symposium: from art historical lectures, artist-talks, to a video-montage featuring California artists.
LACMA does not only own many works of the artists in question, but was very important and debated by the LA art scene at the time.
In this respect, LACMA offers the perfect institutional context for this project and will host the symposium on January 10, 2012.
Free Admission, tickets are required.
