1933, 86 min. b/w. DIR Max Ophüls CAST Lien Deyers, Heinz Rühmann, Ida Wüst, Max Adalbert
In German with English subtitles, DVD
A rather un-German tale about the German river Rhine, an unorthodox last will, the heir of a champagne business and the merits of drinking alcohol. Heinz Rühmann portrays Peter Frank, the appointed heir who struggles with his alcohol addiction and his love for Gina. In 1933, only adults were given permission by the Berlin Film Board to view Max Ophül’s film. Their concern was that the film would encourage young people to consume alcohol and ridicule members of the abstinence movement. In 1937 it was completely banned by the Nazis.
