Jim Henson’s last feature before his untimely death in 1990 is a whimsical journey through an enigmatic, M.C. Escher-esque maze of the film’s title. When Sarah (a sixteen-year-old Jennifer Connelly) unwittingly wishes her younger brother kidnapped by Jareth the Goblin King (Bowie), she must reach the center of his sinuous puzzle in less than thirteen hours or lose her sibling for eternity.
This second collaboration between Henson and “conceptual designer” Brian Froud yields wildly imaginative models for both characters and settings, reminiscent of the pair’s 1982 animatronics project The Dark Crystal.
Now regarded as a cult classic, Henson’s visualization of Terry Jones’ (of Monty Python fame) screenplay is highlighted by trademark puppetry and an inventive performance from Bowie as the musically inclined half–man, half-owl ruler of the labyrinth.
