Pomme (Huppert), a reserved and taciturn nineteen-year-old apprentice hairdresser, meets the studious but more forthcoming François on holiday in Normandy.

The couple move in together on their return to Paris, but their fragile union is tested by the class gap between them.

Huppert garnered a Best Newcomer BAFTA for this breakout role; early (and prescient) intimation of a great talent in the making.
