Music Director Jeffrey Kahane serves as musical “tour guide” for an exploration of Beethoven’s seminal masterwork, Piano Concerto No. 4, Op. 58, at the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra's annual “Discover” concert on Saturday, February 23, 2013, 8 pm, at Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena. The special one-night-only evening is designed to allow audiences to hear a major work with “new ears” leading to a deeper understanding and appreciation of this pinnacle of the piano literature. Kahane begins by illustrating with the Orchestra on stage and at the ready how Beethoven's innovative tour de force revolutionized the concerto form, then delves into Greek mythology to describe the composer's possible portrayal of Orpheus taming the Furies in the second movement. After intermission, Kahane conducts the Orchestra from the piano in a performance of the full work, followed by a question and answer segment with the audience.
According to a review of a previous "Discover" concert in LA Opening Nights, “Some conductors are born educators, and Jeffrey Kahane is one of them.”
