Theatregoers planning trips to London hotels for early next year will be able to catch a performance of La Boheme during their stay in the city.
This is because the classic opera is returning to the Soho Theatre for a limited run, from January 11th to February 19th 2011.
Written by Giacomo Puccini, the show has been directed in a new translation by Robin Norton-Hale, with Andrew Charity providing the musical direction.
"A passionate tale of love, tragedy, indulgence and excess, La Boheme is sung in English by a world-class cast of young opera singers," commented the organisers.
La Boheme is one of the most recognised and popular operas of all time. One of the most remarkable features of this opera is that Puccini was able to present a new kind of heroine and hero in an unfamiliar setting – young intellectuals living in poverty. The title itself introduces the background of the opera to the audience.
The death scene in La Boheme is considered to be one of the most poignant scenes in operatic history; Puccini himself was the first to cry over the heroine’s death scene, emphasizing the emotions that the opera stirs up in the audience.
In four acts, the libretto to La Boheme was produced by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, who based on it Louis-Henri Murger’s novel, Scenes de la vie de boheme. The premiere of the opera was on the 1st February 1896 in Turin at the Teatro Regio. It is set in Paris around 1830.
Tickets are available from £15 for matinees and performances on Mondays, with others ranging in price up to £27.50.
People wanting to go along to the Soho Theatre can stay in a London hotel near to the venue, such as the Soho Hotel.
Suitable London accommodation could include the Grange Langham Court Hotel, which is also close to the venue.
