Knute Heldner was born on June 10, 1877, in Vederslov Smoland, Sweden and began his formal art training at Karlskrona Technical School and the National Royal Academy of Stockholm. Heldner immigrated to the United States in 1902, arriving first in Boston and moving later to the Great Lakes region, where he studied art education at the Minneapolis School of Fine Art. Heldner first traveled to New Orleans in 1923. He became active in local art communities in both New Orleans and Duluth, Minnesota.
