Based on a traditional Vietnamese poem about the conflict between self-aspirations, duty, and destiny, this narrative film takes an intimate look at the trials of a newly immigrated Vietnamese girl who travails in difficult conditions. Weaving back and forth between the present day and flashback sequences, the film follows Kieu, a massage parlor worker in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District, as she grieves over the loss of her closest brother but eventually opens up to the opportunities around her, including an innocent romance.

KIEU was produced as part of a unique filmmaking workshop series called Grrrillah Filmmaking in Three Parts that featured a collective screenwriting process and extensive character research and interviews with massage parlor workers in San Francisco. Directed by Vu T. Thu Ha, the film is shot beautifully and maintains a gauzy and ethereal quality without selling out the substance of the film.
