Kenny Olson
Kenny Olson grew up in the Royal Oak and Birmingham areas outside Detroit. With generations of musicians on both sides of the family, Olson grew up with Detroit’s Big Band jazz, blues and Motown music coming in one ear and all types of rock and funk in the other. With a great grandfather on the fiddle, grandfather on the piano and trumpet, father and uncles on guitar, no wonder Kenny is Kenny.
Olson’s musical influences ran thick through the years: Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Les Paul, Albert King, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Roy Buchanan, Johnny Winter, The Pretenders, The Temptations, Aretha Franklin, Curtis Mayfield, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Chaka Khan, Bob Seger, James Taylor, Robin Trower, Tom Waits, Funkadelic Parliament, Iggy Pop & The Stooges, Thin Lizzy, MC5, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Rolling Stones, King Crimson, Salvador Dali, Alice Cooper, Santana, Aerosmith, Motown and Motor City sounds to name some.
“I have been influenced by so many great musicians. But when I was very little and first heard Jimi Hendrix, I knew my calling. Playing guitar is all I’ve done my whole life," says Olson. "It's all I know how to do."
