The five islands and surrounding salt marsh in the Essex River estuary are a kayaker's and naturalist's delight. These forested islands provide resting and feeding lookouts for migrating raptors while the rich mudflats surrounding them attract a variety of migrating shorebirds. The Castle Neck barrier beach protects these waters, and, as we paddle by extensive salt marshes, we will stop to observe and discuss the wildlife and plants we find. We will pull out and walk Choate Island, also known as Hog Island (owned by The Trustees of Reservations [TTOR]), to observe fall butterflies and migrating monarchs, view the historic houses, and enjoy the sweeping views from the top of the drumlin. Registration is required. Call 978-887-9264 for details. See http://www.massaudubon.org/catalog/listing.php?program_code=612-IP10SU1 for more information.
