On March 26, 2007, the Berlin Declaration was adopted by the Heads of State and Government of the European Union on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of its founding.
Besides recalling the EUs achievements, the document identifies the EUs future goals as well as the challenges it faces: safeguarding the European way of life and assuming global responsibility.

The dream of peace and prosperity could come true because - after devastation and destruction the Europeans had let themselves be guided by the quality that is their most important attribute: tolerance.

On the occasion of the German presidency of the European Union, Karsten D. Voigt will comment on the past, the future and Germanys vision of the European Union.

Since 1999, Karsten D. Voigt has served as Germanys Coordinator for German-American Cooperation, working to strengthen transatlantic relations by advancing collaborative initiatives between Germany, America and Canada. Mr. Voigts activities integrate the support of the political, academic, scientific and cultural communities on both sides of the Atlantic in pursuit of enlarging the avenues of communication, and deepening socio-cultural understanding.
He holds membership on the boards of several prestigious organizations, among them the German Society for Foreign Affairs, Atlantik Brcke e.V., Aspen Institute, Berlin, the German-Russian Forum and RAND Europe.
Born in Elmshorn, Germany, Mr. Voigt studied history, German philology and Scandinavistic at the universities of Hamburg, Copenhagen and Frankfurt.
