Three works - all of which share the distinction of telling the world that an important new voice has arrived - fill this concert. Copland had written symphonies before No. 3, but this life-affirming, patriotic work instantly raised his reputation at home and abroad. Beethoven, who was intent on conquering Vienna, the musical capital of Europe of his time, astounded the musical public with this bold and new style of concerto. Another American composer, George Crumb is featured with his wonderfully mysterious 'A Haunted Landscape.'
