One of DC’s most revered West African dance and music companies, KanKouran presents Mandinkola! – The Legend of Sundiata. The story of King Sundiata and his defeat of King Sumonguro in 1235 is found not only among the Mandinka people of Gambia, but among the entire collective of Mandinka people residing in West Africa (Senegal, Mali, Gambia, Guinea). This historical account provides a link of origin for an extremely disparate and far-spreading community that is still held together by this common ancestral bond. This production stands to be KanKouran’s most challenging presentation thus far. To ensure its success, renowned choreographers directly from West Africa, specializing in the oral traditions of the Mandinka people, have been selected to assist in preparing for this special occasion. The primary assistant to KanKouran’s own artistic director, Assane Konte, is legendary choreographer Aboubacar “Oscar” Camara, from Guinea, West Africa. Supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
